Description

Convert your factory-EFI Ford 5.0L/302 Windsor V8 to a carbureted ignition system with this HEI-style distributor, built with an internal 65,000-volt coil and magnetic trigger so there's no separate coil or ignition box to wire in. The one-wire hookup simplifies installation on EFI-to-carb swap projects for Mustang, Thunderbird, Crown Victoria, F-Series, Bronco, Cougar, and Mark VII applications.

The distributor uses an adjustable mechanical and vacuum advance for street-tunable timing, housed in a machined aluminum body with a steel drive gear. It's built specifically for EFI-to-carb conversions and uses a longer gear/shaft configuration than factory-carbureted Windsor engines — it is not designed to fit engines that came carbureted from the factory, and it does not fit 351W applications. Runs on a standard 12-volt electrical system with an alternator; not compatible with generator-equipped charging systems or vehicles wired through a ballast resistor.

What Is an HEI-Style Distributor?
HEI (High Energy Ignition) integrates the ignition coil and trigger module directly into the distributor housing, replacing the separate coil and points-style trigger used in factory Ford ignition systems. A magnetic pickup replaces mechanical points, so there's no point gap to wear or adjust over time, and the one-wire hookup replaces the multi-wire coil and ballast resistor circuit used on earlier factory setups.

Electrical System Requirements
This distributor's internal coil is built to run on full 12-volt battery voltage, so it requires a 12-volt electrical system with an alternator. It is not compatible with a factory ballast resistor circuit left active in the wiring — the ballast resistor should be removed or bypassed as part of installation, since it would otherwise limit voltage to the internal coil and cause weak spark or misfires.

Performance Benefit
The internal 65,000-volt coil delivers stronger spark output than the factory EFI ignition module it replaces, supporting more consistent combustion through the RPM range after the carburetor conversion. The magnetic trigger holds timing steady without the wear-related drift of a points-based system, and the adjustable mechanical/vacuum advance — with the included adjustment tool — lets the timing curve be tuned specifically for the carbureted setup rather than relying on the factory EFI timing tables.

NOTES
• Designed for Ford 5.0L / 302 EFI-to-carburetor conversion applications only.
• Due to the longer gear/shaft configuration, it is not intended for engines that came carbureted from the factory.
• Will not fit 351W applications.
• This distributor is designed for a 12 volt electrical system with an alternator.
• It is not compatible with a generator and cannot be used with a ballast resistor.
• Distributor gear is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts; consult camshaft manufacturer for recommended gear material before installation.

Q&A

What engines and vehicles does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits the Ford 5.0L (302 CID) Small Block Windsor V8 in EFI-to-carburetor conversion applications. Common applications include the Ford Mustang, Thunderbird, Crown Victoria, F-Series, Bronco, Mercury Cougar, and Lincoln Mark VII equipped with a converted 5.0L/302 Windsor engine.

Will this fit a Ford 302 that came with a carburetor from the factory?
No. This distributor uses a longer shaft and gear configuration designed specifically for EFI-to-carburetor conversion engines. It is not compatible with factory carbureted 302 applications.

Does this distributor fit a 351 Windsor?
No. This distributor is designed specifically for the Ford 5.0L/302 Windsor and is not compatible with 351 Windsor (351W) engines.

Do I need a separate ignition box or coil with this distributor?
No. This HEI distributor features an integrated 65,000-volt ignition coil and an internal magnetic pickup module. No external ignition box or coil is required. Installation requires only a switched 12-volt power connection.

What type of distributor gear is included, and is it compatible with my camshaft?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear that is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic and solid flat tappet camshafts. If your engine uses a roller or specialty camshaft, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended distributor gear material before installation.

Can I use this distributor on a generator-equipped or 6-volt Ford?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with generator-equipped vehicles, 6-volt electrical systems, or ballast resistor ignition circuits.

What type of advance system does this distributor use?
This distributor uses both mechanical (centrifugal) advance and vacuum advance, providing an adjustable ignition timing curve for street performance and drivability.

What is included for adjusting the advance?
A vacuum advance adjustment tool and installation instructions are included with the distributor.
