Description
This Pro Billet distributor is built for the Chrysler/Mopar LA small block V8 family — 273, 318, 340, and 360 CID — using a magnetic pickup trigger with mechanical-only advance for precise, consistent timing control in dedicated performance applications.
This distributor requires a separate ignition box (not included) and an external coil rated at 35,000+ volts (not included), along with a 12-volt electrical system with an alternator. It is not compatible with generator-based charging systems or vehicles still running a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit — the ballast resistor must be removed or bypassed before installation.
Engine fitment covers the Chrysler LA small block — 273 (4.5L), 318 (5.2L), 340 (5.6L), and 360 (5.9L) CID — commonly found in the Dodge Dart, Challenger, Ramcharger, Plymouth Fury, and Chrysler Cordoba. This distributor is not designed to fit Chrysler Magnum-series engines.
Mechanical-Only Advance: What This Means for Tuning
Unlike TSP's Ready to Run and HEI distributors for this platform, this Pro Billet unit uses mechanical advance only, with no vacuum advance canister. This is a common setup for dedicated performance and race applications where a fixed, RPM-based advance curve is preferred over a load-based vacuum advance curve. The included bushings and springs allow the mechanical advance curve to be tuned to your engine combination.
Adjustable Slip Collar for Rotor Phasing
This distributor includes a slip collar, allowing the housing to be rotated independently of the drive gear for fine rotor phasing adjustment — a feature commonly used when degreeing a distributor on a dedicated performance build.
Performance Benefit
The magnetic trigger and mechanical advance combination is built for dedicated performance and race applications where precise, adjustable timing control matters more than street convenience features like vacuum advance or a self-contained coil. The included bushing/spring kit and slip collar let both the advance curve and rotor phasing be tuned to your specific engine combination.

Q&A
Does this distributor have an adjustable slip collar?
Yes. This Pro Billet distributor features an adjustable slip collar that allows precise distributor positioning and rotor phasing during installation. It is especially beneficial on high-performance and race engines where accurate ignition timing and distributor alignment are critical.
Does this distributor require an external ignition box?
Yes. This Pro Billet distributor requires a compatible external CDI ignition box, which is not included. Unlike TSP Ready-to-Run or HEI distributors, this unit will not operate without an external ignition box and an external ignition coil.
Does this distributor have vacuum advance?
No. This distributor uses mechanical (centrifugal) advance only. It does not include vacuum advance, making it well suited for dedicated race and high-performance applications where a fixed RPM-based timing curve is preferred.
What rotation direction does this distributor turn?
Clockwise, matching the standard rotation direction used by the Chrysler LA small block V8 family (273, 318, 340, and 360 CID).
What are the bushings and springs used for?
The included three advance bushings and four advance springs allow you to customize the mechanical advance curve, adjusting how quickly ignition timing advances with increasing engine RPM to match your engine combination and driving style.
Will this fit a Magnum 318 or 360?
No. This distributor is designed specifically for the Chrysler LA-series small block V8 (273, 318, 340, and 360 CID). It is not compatible with Magnum 318 or 360 engines.
What electrical system does this distributor require?
This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with generator-equipped vehicles, 6-volt electrical systems, or ballast resistor ignition circuits.
Emissions Notice
This Top Street Performance (TSP) product is designed for racing and off-road competition use only. It is not legal for use on public roads or emissions-controlled vehicles and does not comply with federal, state, or local emissions regulations. The buyer assumes all responsibility for legal use and installation.
What is a Emissions-Controlled Vehicle?
"An emissions-controlled vehicle is any vehicle equipped with a factory-installed emissions control system designed to reduce air pollution. These systems include catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valves, and diesel particulate filters (DPF). Most vehicles manufactured after 1975 are considered emissions-controlled and must comply with federal and state emissions laws when used on public roads."
