Description

The TSP Pro Series Pro Billet Distributor for the Chevy SBC and BBC is the premium billet race distributor in the TSP Chevy ignition lineup — designed for performance and race builds running an external CDI ignition control box, delivering advance curve tunability, slip collar timing precision, hardened steel gear construction, and brass terminal quality in a single unit.

An external ignition control box is required. Without a compatible CDI box — such as an MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, or equivalent — this distributor will not function. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is also required. Neither the box nor the coil is included. If you need a self-contained ignition upgrade that does not require an external box, see the TSP Chevy HEI (JM6501), small cap Ready-to-Run (JM6701), or Pro Series Ready-to-Run (JM7715).

This distributor has mechanical advance only — no vacuum advance. Timing advance is managed by the mechanical advance curve dialed in with the included advance tuning kit (three bushings and four advance springs) combined with any timing control features in your external ignition box. For street builds where vacuum advance contributes to fuel economy and light-throttle drivability, the HEI or Pro Series Ready-to-Run are better choices. For performance and race builds where full mechanical advance control is the goal, this is the correct unit.

Key premium features over the base Pro Billet (JM6601): The slip collar allows the distributor to be rotated for precise timing adjustment and then locked firmly in position, preventing timing movement under high-RPM and high-vibration conditions. The hardened steel distributor gear provides greater wear resistance than a standard steel gear — particularly important for high-performance and roller camshaft applications. Brass terminal construction provides better conductivity and corrosion resistance than standard terminals. A color-matched spark plug wire retainer with screws is included.

Pro Series Pro Billet vs. Pro Billet — What You're Paying For
The base Pro Billet (JM6601) and this Pro Series Pro Billet (JM7601) are both billet distributor designs requiring an external CDI ignition box. Both have mechanical-only advance and require an external coil. The Pro Series Pro Billet adds five meaningful upgrades over the base unit:
One — Slip collar. The slip collar clamps around the distributor body at the engine block, allowing the distributor to be rotated precisely for timing adjustment and then locked firmly in place. Under high-RPM operation and engine vibration, a slip collar holds timing position more securely than a standard single-bolt hold-down clamp. This is standard equipment on quality billet race distributors.
Two — Hardened steel distributor gear. The base Pro Billet uses a standard steel gear. This unit uses a hardened steel gear — providing significantly greater wear resistance in high-RPM applications and with most roller camshaft gear interfaces.
Three — Advance tuning kit. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included, allowing the mechanical advance curve to be precisely tuned for your engine's camshaft, compression ratio, and RPM range. The base Pro Billet does not include this.
Four — Brass terminals. Higher conductivity and corrosion resistance compared to standard terminal materials.
Five — Color-matched spark plug wire retainer with screws included.

For budget performance builds or applications where these premium features are not required, the base Pro Billet (JM6601) delivers the same basic billet distributor function at $95. For race builds and high-performance street applications where slip collar precision, advance curve tunability, and hardened gear durability matter, this Pro Series Pro Billet is the correct unit.

Ignition Box Required — This is Not a Drop-In Upgrade
Unlike every other TSP Chevy distributor except the base Pro Billet, this unit does not have an integrated ignition module. It requires an external CDI ignition control box to operate. The distributor provides the magnetic trigger signal and distributes high-voltage spark to each cylinder — the external box handles all ignition control logic and coil firing. Popular compatible boxes include the MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, MSD 6AL-2, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, Accel, and similar performance ignition systems.

Mechanical Advance Only — No Vacuum Advance
All timing advance is delivered through the mechanical centrifugal advance mechanism, calibrated using the included three bushings and four advance springs. Many external CDI boxes also provide their own timing features — such as RPM-based advance, launch retard, or two-step rev limiting — which can be coordinated with the mechanical advance for a fully customized timing curve.

Q&A

Does this distributor require an external ignition box?
Yes. Like the base TSP Pro Billet (JM6601), this distributor requires an external CDI ignition control box to operate, such as an MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, or equivalent. Without an external ignition box, this distributor will not function. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is also required. If you need a self-contained ignition upgrade without an external ignition box, see the TSP Chevy HEI, small cap Ready-to-Run, or Pro Series Ready-to-Run distributors.

What is the difference between this Pro Series Pro Billet and the base Pro Billet (JM6601)?
Both distributors require an external ignition box and external ignition coil and use mechanical-only advance. The Pro Series Pro Billet adds five significant upgrades: a slip collar for precise timing adjustment and secure locking, a hardened steel distributor gear for improved wear resistance, an advance tuning kit with three bushings and four springs for mechanical advance curve customization, brass terminals for improved conductivity and corrosion resistance, and a color-matched spark plug wire retainer with mounting screws. The base Pro Billet does not include the slip collar, advance tuning kit, or hardened steel gear and is priced at approximately $95. This Pro Series version is approximately $203. Choose the version that best matches the performance requirements of your build.

What is a slip collar and why does it matter?
A slip collar is a precision clamp that locks around the distributor housing at the engine block, allowing the distributor to be rotated for timing adjustment and then securely locked in place. Under high-RPM operation and the vibration produced by performance engines, a standard single-bolt hold-down clamp can allow the distributor to move, altering ignition timing. The slip collar helps prevent timing movement by securing the distributor housing in a precise position after timing is set. This feature is commonly found on high-quality billet racing distributors and is especially valuable in sustained high-RPM applications.

What engines does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits the Chevrolet Gen. I small block V8—262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 CID—and the standard-deck Mark IV big block—396, 402, 427, and 454 CID—in carbureted applications. It is not compatible with tall-deck big block engines, governor-equipped applications, LS engines, or EFI systems.

Does this distributor have vacuum advance?
No. This distributor uses mechanical (centrifugal) advance only. There is no vacuum advance. Ignition timing advance is controlled through the mechanical advance curve, which can be customized using the included three bushings and four springs. For street-driven vehicles where vacuum advance improves idle quality, fuel economy, and part-throttle drivability, a distributor with vacuum advance—such as the TSP HEI, small cap Ready-to-Run, or Pro Series Ready-to-Run—is a better choice.

Can I tune the advance curve on this distributor?
Yes. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included for complete mechanical advance curve customization, allowing you to control how quickly ignition timing advances as engine RPM increases. Combined with the timing features of your external ignition box, this provides precise control over the engine's ignition timing curve throughout the RPM range.

Why does this use a hardened steel gear instead of a standard steel gear?
The hardened steel distributor gear provides significantly greater wear resistance than a standard steel gear, making it especially beneficial in high-RPM and racing applications where the distributor gear and camshaft gear operate under greater loads for extended periods. For most cast iron camshaft applications, hardened steel is the correct gear material. For roller camshaft applications, verify distributor gear compatibility with your camshaft manufacturer before installation.

What external ignition boxes is this distributor compatible with?
This distributor's magnetic pickup is compatible with most popular CDI ignition control boxes, including MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, MSD 6AL-2, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, Crane HI-6RC, Accel, and similar performance ignition systems. Verify your specific ignition box's wiring requirements and magnetic pickup compatibility before ordering.

How is timing set with this distributor?
Base timing is set using a timing light with the mechanical advance fully retracted at low idle RPM, following the timing procedure recommended by your external ignition box manufacturer. Total timing—base timing plus full mechanical advance—should be verified at the RPM specified by your ignition box manufacturer or engine tuner. The slip collar allows the distributor to be rotated for precise adjustment and then securely locked in place once timing has been confirmed.

What is included with this distributor?
This distributor includes three advance bushings and four advance springs for mechanical advance curve tuning, a color-matched spark plug wire retainer with mounting screws, and an integrated slip collar built into the distributor housing.

Is this compatible with a 6-volt system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
