Description

The TSP Pro Billet Distributor for the Chevy SBC and BBC is a performance magnetic pickup distributor designed for use with an external CDI ignition control box — MSD 6A, 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, Accel, or equivalent. This is not a drop-in HEI replacement. It is a trigger distributor for builders who run or plan to run a dedicated performance ignition system, where the external ignition box handles ignition control, timing management, and coil firing while this distributor provides the magnetic trigger signal and delivers spark to each cylinder.

An external ignition control box is required. Without a compatible CDI or electronic ignition control box wired into the system, this distributor will not function. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is also required — neither the box nor the coil is included. If you are looking for a self-contained ignition upgrade that does not require an external box, see the TSP Chevy HEI (JM6501), the small cap Ready-to-Run (JM6701), or the Pro Series Ready-to-Run (JM7715) — all of which have integrated ignition modules and do not require an external control box.

This distributor uses mechanical advance only — no vacuum advance. All timing advance is handled through the mechanical advance curve in the distributor combined with any timing control features built into your external ignition box. The compact billet aluminum housing provides additional clearance in performance engine bays where full-size distributor housings may interfere with aftermarket intakes, valve covers, or other components.

Engine fitment covers the complete Gen. I Chevrolet small block (262–400 CID) and the standard-deck Mark IV big block (396, 402, 427, and 454 CID) in carbureted applications. Not compatible with tall-deck big block engines or governor-equipped applications.

Who Is This Distributor For?
The Pro Billet is built for performance and race builds where an external CDI ignition control box is already part of the ignition system plan. Unlike the TSP HEI, small cap Ready-to-Run, and Pro Series distributors — all of which have integrated ignition modules and work without an external box — the Pro Billet is a trigger distributor. It provides the magnetic pickup signal that tells the ignition box when to fire, and it distributes the resulting high-voltage spark to the correct cylinder. All ignition control logic, timing functions, and coil firing are handled by the external box.

If you are building a carbureted SBC or BBC with an MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, Accel DFI, or equivalent performance ignition system, this distributor is designed to work within that setup. If you want a self-contained ignition upgrade without an external box, the TSP HEI, small cap Ready-to-Run, or Pro Series are the correct choices.

Mechanical Advance Only — What This Means
This distributor has no vacuum advance. All timing advance is delivered through the mechanical (centrifugal) advance mechanism built into the distributor housing. Many external ignition boxes also offer their own timing advance features — such as the MSD's built-in two-step rev limiter and timing retard — which complement the mechanical advance in the distributor. For street driving where light-throttle vacuum advance contributes to fuel economy and idle quality, a distributor with vacuum advance (the HEI, Ready-to-Run, or Pro Series) is the better choice. For performance and race applications where full mechanical control and maximum advance at RPM is the goal, mechanical-only advance is standard.

Billet Housing — Compact Design
The compact billet aluminum housing provides additional clearance in performance engine bays where larger distributor housings, tall HEI caps, or aftermarket intake manifolds can create clearance problems. The machined aluminum construction keeps weight down and provides a clean, performance-oriented appearance.

Q&A

Does this distributor require an external ignition box?
Yes. This is the only TSP Chevy distributor that requires an external CDI ignition control box to operate. Without a compatible box—such as an MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, Accel, or equivalent—this distributor will not function. The ignition box is not included and must be sourced separately. If you are looking for a self-contained ignition upgrade without an external box, see the TSP Chevy HEI (JM6501), the small cap Ready-to-Run (JM6701R), or the Pro Series Ready-to-Run (JM7715).

What is the difference between this distributor and the TSP HEI, Ready-to-Run, and Pro Series?
The HEI (JM6501), small cap Ready-to-Run (JM6701), and Pro Series (JM7715) all have integrated ignition modules, allowing them to operate without an external ignition box. This Pro Billet distributor has no integrated module and requires an external CDI ignition control box. It is designed for performance builds using a dedicated external ignition system. It also uses mechanical (centrifugal) advance only, with no vacuum advance, whereas the other TSP distributors include vacuum advance. Choose this distributor only if your build already uses, or will use, an external CDI ignition box.

What engines does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits the Chevrolet Gen. I small block V8—262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 CID—and the standard-deck Mark IV big block—396, 402, 427, and 454 CID—in carbureted applications. It is not compatible with tall-deck big block engines, governor-equipped applications, LS engines, or EFI systems.

What external ignition boxes is this distributor compatible with?
This distributor's magnetic pickup is compatible with most popular external CDI ignition control boxes, including MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, MSD 6AL-2, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, Crane HI-6RC, Accel, and similar performance ignition systems. Verify your specific ignition box's wiring requirements and magnetic pickup compatibility before ordering.

Does this distributor have vacuum advance?
No. This distributor uses mechanical (centrifugal) advance only. There is no vacuum advance. All timing advance is delivered through the mechanical advance mechanism and any timing control features built into your external ignition box. For street builds where vacuum advance contributes to fuel economy and idle quality, a distributor with vacuum advance—such as the TSP HEI, small cap Ready-to-Run, or Pro Series—is a better choice.

Does this distributor include an ignition coil?
No. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is required and must be sourced separately. Use a coil that is compatible with your specific external ignition control box.

What is the advantage of a billet distributor in a performance build?
The compact billet aluminum housing provides additional clearance in performance engine bays where larger distributor housings or tall HEI caps may interfere with aftermarket intake manifolds, valve covers, or other high-clearance performance components. The machined aluminum construction also reduces housing weight compared to cast iron housings used on OEM and some aftermarket distributors.

Will this fit a tall-deck big block Chevy?
No. This distributor is compatible with standard-deck Mark IV big block engines only. It is not compatible with tall-deck big block Chevy applications.

What type of distributor gear is included?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear. It is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts. For roller camshaft applications, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended gear material.

How do I set timing with this distributor?
Timing setup with this distributor is controlled by your external ignition box. Follow the timing procedure recommended by your specific ignition box manufacturer. Base timing should be set with a timing light at idle with the mechanical advance fully retracted (typically at low idle RPM). Total timing—base timing plus full mechanical advance—should be verified at the RPM specified by your ignition box manufacturer or engine tuner.

Is this compatible with a 6-volt system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
