Description

Pro Series Ready-to-Run Distributor for the Chevrolet W-Series Big Block 348 and 409 CID V8

The Chevrolet W-Series big block — produced from 1958 through 1965 in 348 and 409 CID displacements — is a distinct engine family with its own distributor requirements. This TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run distributor is engineered specifically for the W-Series and is not interchangeable with later Mark IV big block applications (396, 402, 427, 454). If you're rebuilding a 348 or 409 in an Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne, or C-series truck, this is the correct distributor for your engine family.

The circuit board module with magnetic pick-up trigger replaces the aging contact-point ignition system found on these engines, eliminating the need for points, condensers, and the ongoing maintenance that comes with them. Mechanical and vacuum advance give you direct, tunable control over total advance curve — three interchangeable advance bushings and four springs are included so you can dial in the advance rate to suit your specific build, camshaft, and carburetor setup.

The ready-to-run design requires no external ignition control box. Connect power and ground, wire to an external coil, set base timing, and the system is operational. The machined aluminum housing and steel distributor gear are built for long-term durability. The steel gear is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic and solid flat-tappet camshafts — verify gear material compatibility with your camshaft manufacturer if your build uses a roller or specialty cam profile.

Applications
Designed exclusively for the Chevrolet W-Series Big Block V8 — 5.7L / 348 CID and 6.7L / 409 CID. Not compatible with Mark IV big block engines (396, 402, 427, 454). Confirmed common vehicle applications include Chevrolet Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne, C10, C20, and K10. Suited for carbureted street builds, restorations, and performance applications on W-Series equipped vehicles from the 1958–1965 production era.

Q&A

What engines is this Pro Series distributor designed for?
This distributor is designed exclusively for the Chevrolet W-Series Big Block V8—5.7L (348 CID) and 6.7L (409 CID). It is not compatible with later Mark IV big block engines, including the 396, 402, 427, or 454 CID.

Will this distributor fit a 396, 402, 427, or 454 big block?
No. This distributor is specific to the Chevrolet W-Series engine family (348 and 409 CID). It is not compatible with Mark IV big block engines. If your engine is a 396, 402, 427, or 454, you will need a distributor designed specifically for the Mark IV engine family.

What vehicles used the W-Series 348 and 409 big block?
Confirmed applications include the Chevrolet Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne, C10, C20, and K10, primarily from 1958 through 1965. The W-Series was Chevrolet's high-performance big block engine family used in full-size passenger cars and light-duty trucks during this period.

Do I need an ignition box with this distributor?
No. This is a Ready-to-Run distributor with an integrated circuit board ignition module. No external ignition box, CDI unit, points, or condenser is required. Simply connect power to a compatible external ignition coil, set the base timing, and the distributor is ready for operation.

What coil does this distributor require?
This distributor requires an external ignition coil rated for at least 35,000 volts. The coil is not included and must be purchased separately. Select a coil compatible with your W-Series ignition system and wiring configuration.

What advance type does this distributor use?
This distributor uses both mechanical (centrifugal) advance and vacuum advance. It includes three advance bushings and four advance springs, allowing you to tailor the mechanical advance curve to match your engine combination, camshaft, and carburetor setup.

Is the steel gear compatible with my camshaft?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear that is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic and solid flat tappet camshafts commonly used in W-Series engines. If your engine uses a roller or specialty camshaft, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended distributor gear material before installation.

What is included with this distributor?
This distributor includes three advance bushings, four advance springs for mechanical advance tuning, a color-matched spark plug wire retainer with mounting screws, a black vacuum advance block-off plate, a power extension cable, and a tachometer output extension cable.

Does my 1958–1961 W-Series vehicle need a 12-volt conversion before installing this distributor?
This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a functioning alternator. Chevrolet passenger cars transitioned to 12-volt electrical systems in 1955, so Impala, Bel Air, and Biscayne models equipped with W-Series engines were factory 12-volt. However, if your vehicle has modified wiring, a generator charging system, or a ballast resistor ignition circuit, those components should be verified or updated before installation. This distributor is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistor ignition circuits.

Do I need to set timing after installing this distributor?
Yes. Base ignition timing must be set after installation according to your engine's specifications. For performance applications where vacuum advance is not desired, the included vacuum advance block-off plate can be installed and the mechanical advance curve tuned to suit your engine combination.

What colors is this distributor available in?
This distributor is available in black, blue, and red finishes.
