Description

The TSP HEI Distributor for the Buick Nailhead V8 is a self-contained large-cap HEI ignition upgrade covering the complete Nailhead family — 264 CID (4.3L), 322 CID (5.3L), 364 CID (6.0L), 401 CID (6.6L), and 425 CID (7.0L) — in carbureted applications across the full 1953–1966 Nailhead production era. The integrated HEI design combines the ignition coil, ignition module, cap, and rotor into a single unit, connecting to a single 12-volt source with no external coil, ignition box, or condenser required.

Counter-clockwise rotation: The Buick Nailhead V8 runs counter-clockwise distributor rotation — the opposite of most domestic V8 engines. This affects rotor phasing and spark plug wire routing and must be accounted for during installation. Do not assume standard clockwise plug wire layout. Verify your firing order and wire routing for counter-clockwise rotation before finalizing installation.

The 65,000-volt internal HEI coil delivers substantially stronger spark than a factory points-style distributor, supporting easier cold starts, cleaner idle quality, and more consistent ignition performance across the full RPM range. It is not related to the Buick small block (215–350) or the later Buick big block (400–455) — it is its own engine family spanning five displacements across thirteen model years. Named for its characteristic small upright valves, the Nailhead powered some of Buick's most celebrated vehicles and became a fixture in American hot rod and custom culture, particularly in the 401 and 425 CID forms. Factory points-style ignition systems on these engines are now decades old and benefit significantly from an HEI upgrade — especially on engines that have been rebuilt, recarbureted, or modified for performance.

The HEI is the right choice for straightforward ignition upgrades, while the Pro Series is better suited for performance builds where tuning the advance curve matters.

Does this distributor include an ignition coil?

For the Gran Sport/GS, this distributor fits the 1965–1966 Buick Gran Sport and Skylark Gran Sport equipped with the 401 Nailhead. Other GS models used the small block and are not compatible.

Will this fit a Buick Apollo?
No. The Buick Apollo (1973–1974) used the small block 350 CID engine, not the Nailhead. This distributor is not compatible with the Apollo or any other Buick small block application.

Is this compatible with the Buick 400, 430, or 455 big block?
No. The Buick 400, 430, and 455 are later big block engines that are completely separate from the Nailhead family. This distributor is not compatible with any of these engines. Despite the 401 Nailhead sometimes being called the "400," it is a different engine from the later Buick 400/430/455 big block series.

Does this distributor have a tachometer output or mechanical tach drive?
No. This distributor does not include a mechanical tachometer drive or a dedicated tachometer output signal cable. If a tachometer output is required for your build, the TSP Nailhead Pro Series Ready-to-Run distributor includes a tachometer output extension cable.

What type of distributor gear is included?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear. Steel gears are compatible with cast iron hydraulic and solid flat tappet camshafts. For roller camshaft applications, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended gear material before installation.

Do I need to set ignition timing after installing this distributor?
Yes. Base ignition timing must be set with a timing light after installation. For most carbureted Nailhead applications, a starting point of 8–12 degrees BTDC at idle is a common reference, though the optimal setting will vary based on your displacement, compression ratio, camshaft profile, and carburetor tune.

Is this distributor compatible with a 6-volt electrical system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
