Description
The TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run Distributor with Fixed Collar for the Chevy SBC and BBC delivers the full Pro Series Ready-to-Run feature set — advance curve tunability, tachometer output, vacuum advance block-off plate, and an integrated ignition module requiring no external ignition box — with a fixed collar on the distributor housing that provides consistent body positioning and structural alignment at the engine block.
Fixed Collar vs. Adjustable Collar — Understanding the Difference:
TSP offers three Pro Series Ready-to-Run variants. The standard Pro Series (JM7715) uses a conventional hold-down clamp and carries no collar. This fixed collar version (JM7701-2) adds a collar to the distributor housing that provides a positive reference point for distributor body alignment in the block — timing is still set using the traditional hold-down method of rotating the distributor and securing it in position. The adjustable collar version (JM7716) adds a slip collar that can be loosened to allow the distributor body to be rotated independently for timing adjustment and then re-tightened to lock timing precisely — providing the highest level of timing precision and security.
Distributor rotation is clockwise — standard for the Chevy SBC and BBC. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is required — coil is not included. No external ignition control box is needed — the ignition module is integrated. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included for mechanical advance curve tuning. A vacuum advance block-off plate, tachometer output extension cable, power extension cable, and color-matched plug wire retainer are also included.
Performance Benefit
The integrated circuit board module and magnetic pickup deliver precise, repeatable spark timing without the wear and drift of points-based systems. Three advance bushings and four advance springs allow the mechanical advance curve to be matched precisely to your engine's camshaft profile, compression ratio, and carburetor calibration. A vacuum advance block-off plate is included for performance builds preferring full mechanical advance only. A tachometer output extension cable is included for aftermarket tach wiring without additional adapters.

Q&A
What is a fixed collar and what does it do on this distributor?
The fixed collar is a collar on the distributor housing that provides consistent body positioning and an alignment reference at the engine block. Unlike the adjustable slip collar on JM7716—which can be loosened, rotated to precisely set timing, and then re-tightened—the fixed collar remains in a fixed position and ignition timing is adjusted using the traditional distributor hold-down method.
What is the difference between this Fixed Collar version, the Adjustable Collar version (JM7716R), and the standard Pro Series (JM7715)?
All three are Pro Series Ready-to-Run distributors with the same engine fitment, integrated ignition module, advance tuning kit, tachometer output, and external coil requirement. The standard Pro Series (JM7715) uses a conventional distributor hold-down clamp with no collar. This fixed collar version (JM7701-2) adds a fixed collar to the housing at the same price. The adjustable collar version (JM7716) adds a precision slip collar that can be loosened and re-tightened for more precise timing adjustment and secure lock-down, at a $35 premium. Contact TSP to determine which collar design best suits your specific application.
Does this distributor require an external ignition box?
No. The integrated ignition module eliminates the need for an external ignition box, CDI unit, points, or condenser. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is required, but the coil is not included.
What engines does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits the Chevrolet Gen. I small block V8—262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 CID—and the standard-deck Mark IV big block—396, 402, 427, and 454 CID—in carbureted applications. It is not compatible with tall-deck big block engines, LS or Gen. V LT platforms, governor-equipped applications, or EFI systems. Distributor rotation is clockwise.
What is included with this distributor?
This distributor includes three advance bushings and four advance springs for mechanical advance curve tuning, a color-matched spark plug wire retainer with mounting screws, a black vacuum advance block-off plate, a power extension cable, and a tachometer output extension cable.
Can I tune the advance curve on this distributor?
Yes. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included, allowing precise adjustment of the mechanical advance curve to suit your engine combination, camshaft profile, and carburetor calibration.
Does this distributor have a tachometer output?
Yes. A tachometer output extension cable is included for connecting an aftermarket electronic tachometer. This distributor does not include a mechanical tachometer drive.
What direction does this distributor rotate?
This distributor rotates clockwise, which is the standard rotation direction for all Chevrolet Gen. I small block and Mark IV big block V8 engines.
Does this distributor include vacuum advance?
Yes. Both mechanical (centrifugal) advance and vacuum advance are included. A vacuum advance block-off plate is also provided for performance applications where full mechanical advance only is preferred.
What type of distributor gear is included?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear. It is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts. For roller camshaft applications, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended distributor gear material.
Do I need to set ignition timing after installation?
Yes. Set base ignition timing with a timing light after installation. For most carbureted SBC 350 applications, a starting point of 8–12 degrees BTDC at idle is a common reference. Follow the installation instructions included with this distributor for the proper timing adjustment procedure when using the fixed collar.
Is this compatible with a 6-volt system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
