Description

Get precise timing control and street-friendly drivability with this TSP Pro Series Pro Billet distributor with vacuum advance. Billet aluminum housing, a slip collar for locked-in timing precision, and a full mechanical advance tuning kit (3 bushings, 4 springs) are combined with vacuum advance for improved idle quality, part-throttle fuel economy, and light-throttle drivability on street-driven builds.

Requires an external CDI ignition box — MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, or equivalent. Without a compatible box, this distributor will not function. An external coil rated 35,000V+ is also required. Neither is included.

Vacuum advance adds timing at light throttle and idle, typically dropping out at full throttle and high RPM with no effect on peak performance — making this well suited to street-driven performance builds.

Installation
Requires an external CDI ignition box (MSD 6A/6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, or equivalent) and a 35,000V+ external coil — neither included. Not compatible with HEI coil-in-cap setups, engines using a governor, generator-equipped systems, or a ballast resistor. Not compatible with tall-deck big block (366ci, tall-deck 427ci truck) engines. Verify distributor gear compatibility with camshaft material before installation.

Does this distributor require an external ignition box?
Yes. Like the mechanical-only Pro Series Pro Billet (JM7601), this distributor requires an external CDI ignition control box, such as an MSD 6A, MSD 6AL, Mallory HyFire, Crane HI-6, or equivalent. Without an external ignition box, this distributor will not function. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is also required. Neither the ignition box nor the coil is included. What is the difference between this distributor and the mechanical-only Pro Series Pro Billet (JM7601)?

These two distributors are identical in price, construction, slip collar, ignition box requirement, external coil requirement, and advance tuning kit. The only difference is that this version includes vacuum advance in addition to mechanical advance, while JM7601R uses mechanical advance only. Vacuum advance adds ignition timing during idle and light-throttle cruising, improving drivability, idle quality, and part-throttle fuel economy on street-driven vehicles. At full throttle and high RPM, vacuum advance disengages and has no effect on peak performance. Choose this vacuum advance version for street performance builds. Choose the mechanical-only version (JM7601) for dedicated race and track applications where vacuum advance is not desired.

If my ignition box controls timing, what does vacuum advance add?
Most external CDI ignition boxes control total ignition timing through the mechanical advance curve and the ignition box's own timing features, but they do not replace the distributor's vacuum advance canister. Vacuum advance adds ignition timing specifically during high manifold vacuum conditions, such as idle and light-throttle cruising, where it improves combustion efficiency, idle quality, and fuel economy. At wide-open throttle, manifold vacuum drops, causing the vacuum advance to disengage and allowing the mechanical advance and ignition box to control total timing. These systems work together: mechanical advance controls RPM-based timing, vacuum advance controls load-based timing, and the ignition box provides high-energy spark output and any additional timing functions it supports.

What engines does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits the Chevrolet Gen. I small block V8—262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 CID—and the standard-deck Mark IV big block—396, 402, 427, and 454 CID—in carbureted applications. It is not compatible with tall-deck big block engines, governor-equipped applications, LS engines, or EFI systems.

The slip collar helps prevent timing changes by securing the distributor housing in a fixed position after adjustment, making it valuable for both high-performance street and racing applications.

Can I tune the advance curve on this distributor?
Yes. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included for complete mechanical advance curve customization, allowing you to control how quickly ignition timing advances as engine RPM increases. This works alongside the vacuum advance system, which provides additional timing during idle and light-throttle operation, creating a comprehensive ignition timing setup for street performance applications.

Does this distributor include a coil?
No. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is required and must be sourced separately. Use an ignition coil that is compatible with your specific external CDI ignition control box.

How do I set timing with this distributor?
Follow the timing procedure recommended by your specific external ignition box manufacturer. Set base timing with a timing light at idle while the mechanical advance is fully retracted. Verify total timing—base timing plus full mechanical advance—at the RPM specified by your ignition box manufacturer or engine tuner. The vacuum advance will add additional timing at idle and during light-throttle operation, which is normal and will be visible when checking timing.

Is this compatible with a 6-volt system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
