Description
The TSP HEI Distributor for the Chevrolet SBC and BBC is a self-contained large-cap HEI ignition upgrade covering the complete Gen. I Chevrolet small block V8 family and the Mark IV big block V8 family in carbureted applications. SBC fitment spans the full Gen. I displacement range — 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 CID. BBC Mark IV fitment covers the 396, 402, 427, and 454 CID standard-deck engines. The integrated HEI design combines the ignition coil, ignition module, cap, and rotor into a single unit, connecting to a single 12-volt source with no external coil, ignition box, or condenser required.
The 65,000-volt internal HEI coil delivers substantially stronger spark than a factory points-style distributor or a worn stock HEI unit, supporting easier cold starts, cleaner idle quality, and more consistent ignition performance from idle through the top of the RPM range. The magnetic pickup trigger replaces the mechanical points contact entirely and requires no routine maintenance. Both mechanical and vacuum advance are included, with a vacuum advance adjustment tool shipped with the distributor for advance curve tuning.
Available in seven finishes — Red, Blue, Orange, Clear, Red/Black, Black, and All Black — this distributor fits the full range of carbureted Chevy V8 builds: Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, Corvette, El Camino, Monte Carlo, Malibu, Impala, C10, C20, K-series trucks, Blazer, Suburban, and their GMC equivalents. From a numbers-matching restoration to a high-compression street build, the SBC and BBC HEI upgrade is one of the most impactful and straightforward ignition improvements available for carbureted Chevy V8 applications.
The Most Widely Used HEI Distributor in the Chevy V8 World
The Chevrolet Gen. I small block V8 and Mark IV big block are the most produced and most widely modified American V8 engine families in history. The Gen. I SBC was produced from 1955 through 2003 across ten displacements spanning 262 to 400 CID, and powered virtually every Chevrolet and GMC vehicle line from the Corvette and Camaro to full-size trucks and SUVs. The Mark IV BBC ran from 1965 through 1990 in displacements from 396 through 454 CID and powered the highest-performance muscle cars and trucks of the era. This HEI distributor covers carbureted applications across both families in a single unit — one of the most broadly applicable performance ignition upgrades available for any Chevy V8.
Performance Benefit
The 65,000-volt internal HEI coil delivers stronger, more consistent spark than a factory points-style setup or a degraded stock HEI across the full RPM range. The magnetic pickup trigger holds timing accurately without the wear and drift that accumulates in points-based ignition systems. For a stock 350 or 383 street build, the HEI upgrade translates directly to easier cold starts and improved throttle response. For a high-compression 427 or 454 running an aggressive cam and a double-pumper carburetor, consistent, high-voltage spark becomes even more critical to making power reliably across the RPM range.

Q&A
What Chevy engines does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits the Chevrolet Gen. I small block V8—262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 CID—and the Mark IV big block V8—396, 402, 427, and 454 CID standard deck—in carbureted applications. It is not compatible with tall-deck big block engines, LS/Gen. III/Gen. IV engines, or any EFI or computer-controlled ignition system.
Does this distributor fit the 427 big block?
Yes. The 427 CID is a standard-deck Mark IV big block—the same architecture as the 396, 402, and 454—and is compatible with this distributor. The 427 was used in the Corvette, Chevelle SS, COPO Camaro, and numerous truck applications.
What is the difference between this distributor and the TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run?
This HEI distributor integrates the ignition coil directly into the distributor cap, connects to a single 12V wire, and requires no external coil, making it the simpler, lower-cost option suited for street and restoration builds. The TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run requires an external ignition coil (not included) but includes an advance tuning kit (three bushings and four springs), a vacuum advance block-off plate, and a tachometer output cable, making it the better choice for performance builds where the mechanical advance curve needs to be tuned for a specific camshaft, compression ratio, or carburetor combination.
Will this fit a tall-deck big block Chevy?
No. This distributor is not compatible with tall-deck BBC engines. Verify your engine uses a standard-deck block before ordering.
Will this fit an LS engine or any fuel-injected Chevy V8?
No. This distributor is designed for the Gen. I small block and Mark IV big block in carbureted HEI ignition applications only. It is not compatible with LS, Gen. III, Gen. IV, or any EFI or computer-controlled ignition system.
Does this distributor include an ignition coil?
Yes. The ignition coil is built into the distributor cap as part of the HEI design. No external coil is required. The only external connection needed is a single 12-volt hot wire.
Do I need an external ignition box or control module?
No. The ignition control module is integrated internally within the distributor. No external ignition box, CDI unit, points, or condenser is required.
What is the coil output voltage?
This distributor produces 65,000 volts of coil output, significantly higher than a factory points-style distributor or a degraded stock HEI, delivering a stronger, more consistent spark for improved cold starts, idle stability, and throttle response.
What finish options are available?
This distributor is available in seven finish options—Red, Blue, Orange, Clear, Red/Black, Black, and All Black—to match your engine bay build aesthetic.
What type of distributor gear is included, and what camshafts is it compatible with?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear. The gear is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts. For roller camshaft applications, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended gear material, as a mismatched gear and cam combination will cause accelerated wear on both components.
Do I need to set ignition timing after installation?
Yes. Base ignition timing must be set with a timing light after installation. For most carbureted SBC 350 applications, a starting point of 8–12 degrees BTDC at idle is a common reference. For BBC 454 applications, 8–10 degrees BTDC is typical. Optimal timing varies by compression ratio, camshaft profile, and carburetor calibration. Consult your engine builder or tuner for performance-specific recommendations.
Is this distributor compatible with a 6-volt system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
