Description

HEI Distributor with Super Cap for Chevrolet Late Inline-Six 194, 230, 250, and 292 CID (1963 and Later)

The Chevrolet inline-six engine family that ran from 1963 onward — covering the 194, 230, 250, and 292 CID displacements — powered some of the most popular builds in Chevrolet's history: Nova and Camaro inline-six swaps, C10 and K10 work trucks, Chevelle base models, and full-size vans. This TSP HEI distributor with Super Cap brings modern high-energy ignition performance to those applications with a self-contained design that eliminates the need for a separate ignition box or external coil.

This is a true HEI distributor — the internal coil and Super Cap are built into the distributor unit, producing 65,000 volts of spark output. That is a meaningful increase over standard external-coil distributor setups and results in more complete combustion across the RPM range, particularly on engines with wider plug gaps, mild performance camshafts, or lean-running carbureted setups. The magnetic trigger delivers a consistent, repeatable signal, and mechanical and vacuum advance give you direct control over base timing and total advance curve.

Applications
Compatible with Chevrolet inline-six engines (1963 and later) — 3.2L / 194 CID, 3.8L / 230 CID, 4.1L / 250 CID, and 4.8L / 292 CID. Not compatible with early Chevrolet stovebolt inline-six engines — 216, 235, or 261 CID. Designed for HEI standalone ignition systems and carbureted applications only. Confirmed common vehicle applications include Chevrolet C10, K10, Nova, Camaro, Chevelle, and Chevrolet/GMC vans.

Q&A

Q: What engines is this HEI distributor compatible with?
A: This HEI distributor fits Chevrolet inline-six engines introduced in 1963, including the 194 CID (3.2L), 230 CID (3.8L), 250 CID (4.1L), and 292 CID (4.8L) in carbureted applications. It is not compatible with the earlier Chevrolet Stovebolt inline-six engines (216, 235, or 261 CID), which use a different distributor design.

Q: Will this distributor fit my early Chevy Stovebolt 216, 235, or 261 inline-six?
A: No. This distributor is designed only for the 1963-and-later Chevrolet inline-six engine family. The earlier Stovebolt 216, 235, and 261 CID engines require a different distributor. For those applications, use the TSP Early Inline-Six HEI distributor.

Q: What is the difference between this HEI distributor and a distributor with an external coil?
A: This is a true HEI distributor with the ignition coil integrated into the Super Cap. It delivers up to 65,000 volts and requires no external ignition coil, ignition box, or separate ignition module. Distributors with external coils require additional wiring and a separate coil, while this HEI design provides a simpler, self-contained installation.

Q: Do I need an ignition box or external coil with this distributor?
A: No. The high-output ignition coil is built into the distributor cap, and the ignition control module is integrated inside the distributor. Simply supply a full 12-volt ignition source, install the distributor, set the timing, and it's ready to run.

Q: What is a Super Cap and why does it matter?
A: The Super Cap is a larger-diameter HEI distributor cap that provides increased spacing between spark plug wire terminals. The additional spacing helps reduce the risk of spark crossfire under high-voltage or high-RPM conditions while also providing room for the integrated HEI ignition coil.

Q: What coil output does this distributor produce?
A: This distributor features an integrated HEI coil capable of producing up to 65,000 volts, delivering a stronger, more consistent spark for improved cold starts, idle quality, throttle response, and combustion efficiency.

Q: What advance type does this distributor use?
A: This distributor uses both mechanical (centrifugal) advance and vacuum advance. A vacuum advance adjustment tool is included, allowing you to fine-tune the vacuum advance curve without removing the distributor.

Q: What vehicles does this distributor fit?
A: Common applications include Chevrolet C10, C20, K10, K20, Nova, Camaro, Chevelle, Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne, Chevrolet/GMC vans, and other Chevrolet or GMC cars and trucks equipped with carbureted 194, 230, 250, or 292 CID inline-six engines from 1963 onward. Always verify your engine displacement before ordering.

Q: Is the distributor gear compatible with my camshaft?
A: This distributor includes a steel distributor gear that is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts. If your engine uses a roller or specialty camshaft, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended distributor gear material before installation.

Q: Is this distributor compatible with EFI applications?
A: No. This distributor is designed for carbureted engines using a standalone HEI ignition system. It is not compatible with EFI, TBI, or computer-controlled ignition systems.

Q: What is included with this distributor?
A: Included are the HEI distributor with Super Cap and integrated 65,000-volt ignition coil, a vacuum advance adjustment tool, and installation instructions.

Q: What electrical system does this distributor require?
A: This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a functioning alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generator-equipped vehicles, or ballast resistor ignition circuits. A full 12-volt ignition feed is required for proper HEI operation.
