Description

The TSP Vortec Small Block V8 EFI Distributor is a direct factory replacement for the factory computer-controlled distributor used in 1996–2002 Chevrolet and GMC vehicles equipped with the Gen. I Vortec 5000 (305 CID / 5.0L) or Vortec 5700 (350 CID / 5.7L) small block V8. This distributor restores factory-spec distributor signal accuracy for EFI applications experiencing distributor failure, misfires, or distributor-related fault codes.

All ignition timing is controlled by the factory PCM — there is no mechanical or vacuum advance on this unit. The crab-style female cap matches the factory Vortec plug wire connector configuration. An external ignition coil is required — the coil is not included. No ignition box is required — the PCM handles all ignition control. A zinc-coated steel hold-down clamp is included.

This distributor is compatible with the factory EFI system and PCM. It is a direct replacement unit and does not require a retune for standard replacement installations.

Year Range and Application
This distributor is a direct replacement for the computer-controlled factory distributor used in 1996–2002 Vortec applications. The Vortec 5000 (305 CID) and Vortec 5700 (350 CID) are Gen. I small block V8 engines with Vortec cylinder heads and sequential fuel injection. They are not the same as earlier carbureted 305 and 350 SBC applications — the distributor is specific to the 1996–2002 EFI configuration.

Q&A

What vehicles and engines does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits 1996–2002 Chevrolet and GMC vehicles equipped with the Gen. I Vortec 5000 (305 CID) or Vortec 5700 (350 CID) small block V8. Supported applications include the Chevrolet C/K 1500 (1996–1999), Silverado 1500 (1999–2002), Tahoe (1996–2002), Suburban (1996–2002), Express Van (1996–2002), Camaro (1996–2002), GMC Sierra 1500 (1999–2002), Yukon (1996–2002), and Savana Van (1996–2002) in applicable engine configurations.

Is this compatible with LS engines?
No. LS (Gen. III/IV) engines use a coil-near-plug ignition system and do not use a distributor. This distributor is designed exclusively for the Gen. I Vortec 305 (5.0L) and 350 (5.7L) EFI engines. Because many 1999-and-later Silverado and Sierra models were equipped with LS engines, verify your engine before ordering.

Is this compatible with a pre-1996 carbureted 305 or 350?
No. Pre-1996 carbureted Gen. I small block Chevrolet engines use a different distributor, typically an HEI-style distributor. This unit is specifically designed for the 1996–2002 Vortec EFI ignition system.

Does this distributor include an ignition coil?
No. An external ignition coil compatible with the Vortec EFI ignition system is required. The ignition coil is not included and must be purchased separately.

Do I need an ignition box or timing control unit?
No. The factory Powertrain Control Module (PCM) manages all ignition timing and advance. No aftermarket ignition box or timing control unit is required.

Does this distributor have mechanical or vacuum advance?
No. This distributor does not use mechanical (centrifugal) or vacuum advance. All ignition timing is controlled electronically by the factory PCM.

Do I need to set ignition timing after installing this distributor?
The PCM controls ignition timing on Vortec EFI applications, so there is no traditional base timing adjustment using a timing light. After installation, verify proper distributor indexing with a scan tool by following the factory service procedure for your specific vehicle. Incorrect distributor positioning can result in hard starting, misfires, or driveability issues.

What type of cap does this distributor use?
This distributor uses a crab-style female cap connector, matching the factory Vortec distributor design. Replacement spark plug wires must be compatible with the factory-style crab cap connector.

What is included with this distributor?
A zinc-coated steel distributor hold-down clamp is included. The ignition coil is not included.

What type of distributor gear is included?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear. If your engine has an aftermarket camshaft, consult the camshaft manufacturer to verify the recommended distributor gear material before installation.

What is a Emissions-Controlled Vehicle?
"An emissions-controlled vehicle is any vehicle equipped with a factory-installed emissions control system designed to reduce air pollution. These systems include catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valves, and diesel particulate filters (DPF). Most vehicles manufactured after 1975 are considered emissions-controlled and must comply with federal and state emissions laws when used on public roads."
