Description

The TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run Distributor for the Cadillac V8 delivers precise, adjustable ignition performance across the complete Cadillac big block family — 368 CID (6.0L), 425 CID (7.0L), 472 CID (7.7L), and 500 CID (8.2L) — in carbureted applications from 1968 through 1984. Built on a machined aluminum housing with a circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger, this distributor provides accurate, repeatable ignition timing without the need for points, condenser, or a separate ignition control box.

Unlike the TSP Cadillac HEI distributor, the Pro Series uses an external ignition coil — giving you the flexibility to select a coil matched to your specific build — while the internal ignition module eliminates the need for a separate ignition control box or CDI unit. Clockwise distributor rotation is consistent with standard Cadillac big block architecture. A minimum coil output of 35,000 volts is required — coil is not included.

Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included, allowing the mechanical advance curve to be tailored to your engine's camshaft profile, compression ratio, and carburetor calibration — the defining advantage of the Pro Series over a fixed-curve HEI setup. A vacuum advance block-off plate is included for performance and race builds where vacuum advance is not desired. A tachometer output extension cable is included for straightforward aftermarket tach wiring without additional adapters.

The Cadillac big block powered the full range of Cadillac vehicles across four displacements from 1968 through 1984 — DeVille, Eldorado, Fleetwood, Calais, and the Commercial Chassis through the 472 and 500 CID era, transitioning through the 425 and 368 CID into the early 1980s. The Pro Series provides the advance tunability and component quality to serve both concours restoration builds and modified performance applications.

Why Choose the Pro Series Over the Cadillac HEI?
The TSP Cadillac HEI distributor is the simpler option — integrated coil, single 12V wire, direct-fit replacement suited for stock rebuilds and street restorations. The Pro Series Ready-to-Run is the step up for builders who need more control. The external coil setup lets you run a coil matched to your ignition system and build level. The included advance tuning kit — three bushings and four advance springs — allows the mechanical advance curve to be customized for your specific engine rather than running a fixed factory-style ramp. A vacuum advance block-off plate is included for performance builds where full mechanical advance control is preferred. For a straightforward ignition refresh on a stock Cadillac, the HEI is the right call. For a modified build, a performance carburetor application, or any situation where advance curve behavior matters, the Pro Series is the better tool.

Performance Benefit
The circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger deliver precise, repeatable spark timing without the wear and drift that accumulates in points-based ignition systems. Three advance bushings and four advance springs allow full adjustment of the mechanical advance curve — how quickly timing rises with RPM — which is particularly valuable on Cadillac big block builds running aftermarket camshafts, elevated compression, or performance carburetors. The vacuum advance block-off plate gives race and dedicated performance builds the option to eliminate vacuum advance influence entirely. A tachometer output extension cable is included to simplify aftermarket tach wiring without additional adapters.

Q&A

What Cadillac engines and vehicles does this distributor fit?
This distributor fits all four Cadillac big block V8 displacements — 472 CID (7.7L, 1968–1974), 500 CID (8.2L, 1970–1976), 425 CID (7.0L, 1977–1979), and 368 CID (6.0L, 1980–1984) — in carbureted applications. Supported vehicles include the Cadillac DeVille, Sedan de Ville, Coupe de Ville, Eldorado, Fleetwood, Fleetwood Brougham, Calais (1968–1976), Seville (1980–1984 with 368 V8), Series 75 Limousine, and Commercial Chassis in applicable years. Not compatible with the Cadillac HT4100, Northstar, or any fuel-injected Cadillac V8.

What is the difference between this Pro Series distributor and the TSP Cadillac HEI distributor?
The HEI distributor integrates the ignition coil directly into the distributor cap, connects to a single 12V wire, and requires no external coil, making it the simpler, lower-cost option for street rebuilds and restoration applications. The Pro Series Ready-to-Run requires an external ignition coil (35,000V minimum, not included) but includes three advance bushings, four advance springs, a vacuum advance block-off plate, and a tachometer output extension cable. The Pro Series allows the mechanical advance curve to be tuned specifically for your engine combination—a meaningful advantage on modified builds running aftermarket camshafts, elevated compression, or performance carburetors. For a stock or lightly modified Cadillac, the HEI is the right choice. For a performance-focused build where advance curve behavior matters, the Pro Series is the better tool.

The title says 472/500 — does this also fit the Cadillac 368 and 425?
Yes. This distributor fits all four Cadillac big block displacements — 368, 425, 472, and 500 CID. The 472 and 500 were the primary Cadillac engines from 1968 through 1976. The 425 replaced them from 1977 through 1979. The 368 was used from 1980 through 1984. All four share compatible distributor architecture and are confirmed fitment for this unit.

Does this distributor include a coil?
No. This is a Ready-to-Run design that requires an external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher. The coil is not included and must be sourced separately.

Do I need an external ignition box or CDI unit?
No. The internal ignition module handles all ignition control. No external ignition box, CDI unit, points, or condenser is required.

What is included with this distributor?
This distributor ships with three advance bushings and four advance springs for mechanical advance curve tuning, a color-matched spark plug wire retainer with screws, a vacuum advance block-off plate in black, a power extension cable, and a tachometer output extension cable.

Can I tune the advance curve on this distributor?
Yes. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included, allowing you to adjust how quickly mechanical advance comes in with rising RPM. For Cadillac big block builds running aftermarket camshafts, higher compression ratios, or performance carburetors, a properly calibrated advance curve can meaningfully improve power delivery and part-throttle drivability compared to a fixed factory advance setup.

What direction does this distributor rotate?
This distributor rotates clockwise, consistent with standard Cadillac big block V8 architecture across the 368, 425, 472, and 500 CID engines.

Does this distributor have a tachometer output?
Yes. A tachometer output extension cable is included for connecting an aftermarket electronic tachometer without a separate signal adapter. This distributor does not include a mechanical tachometer drive.

Will this fit a Cadillac Seville?
Yes, for 1980–1984 Seville models equipped with the 368 CID (6.0L) Cadillac V8. The 1976–1979 Seville used the Oldsmobile 350 V8, not the Cadillac big block, and is not compatible with this distributor.

What type of distributor gear is included, and what camshafts is it compatible with?
This distributor includes a steel distributor gear. The gear is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts. For roller camshaft applications, consult your camshaft manufacturer for the recommended gear material, as using an incompatible gear and cam combination will cause accelerated wear on both components.

Do I need to set ignition timing after installing this distributor?
Yes. Base ignition timing must be set with a timing light after installation. For most carbureted Cadillac 472 and 500 applications, a starting point of 8–10 degrees BTDC at idle is a common reference, though the optimal setting will vary based on your specific compression ratio, camshaft profile, advance spring and bushing selection, and carburetor tune.

Is this distributor compatible with a 6-volt system or generator?
No. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with a charging alternator. It is not compatible with 6-volt systems, generators, or ballast resistors.
