Description
These valve covers are built for the AMC V8 engine family across its full production run — 4.8L/290, 5.6L/343, and 6.4L/390 (1966–1969 Gen-2 blocks), plus 5.0L/304, 5.9L/360, and 6.6L/401 (1970–1991 Gen-3 blocks). Common applications include the AMC AMX, Javelin, Rebel, Matador, Hornet, and Ambassador, along with Jeep CJ, J-Series trucks, Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer SJ, and full-size Cherokee (not the later XJ Cherokee, which never used the AMC V8).
Construction is chrome-plated steel with a 3 1/8 in. height and a plain top style, using a perimeter-bolt mounting pattern. The chrome finish gives a clean, classic appearance suited to restorations and period-correct engine bays as well as AMC/Jeep V8 swaps into other chassis.
Gen-2 (290/343/390) and Gen-3 (304/360/401) AMC V8s share the same external block dimensions and valve cover bolt pattern, so these covers fit either family. Driveline components like flywheels and flexplates are not interchangeable across the two generations, but that has no bearing on valve cover fitment.
These covers are sold as a pair without gaskets, grommets, or mounting hardware, so those should be sourced to match your specific engine and breather setup.
Applications
Fits AMC V8 engines: 290, 343, 390 (1966–1969) and 304, 360, 401 (1970–1991). Vehicle applications include AMC AMX, Javelin, Rebel, Matador, Hornet, and Ambassador; Jeep CJ Series (304, 1972–1983); Jeep J-Series trucks (304/360/401, 1971–1987); Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer SJ (304/360/401, 1971–1991); and Jeep full-size Cherokee (360/401, 1974–1983). Not compatible with the later XJ Cherokee, which used a different engine lineup.
Installation
Covers use a perimeter-bolt mounting pattern with a 3 1/8 in. height. Gaskets, grommets, and mounting hardware are not included and should be matched to your gasket surface and breather/PCV configuration. Confirm rocker arm and hood clearance before installation.

COMMON VEHICLE APPLICATIONS
AMC AMX / Javelin / Rebel / Matador / Hornet / Ambassador (V8-equipped years)
Jeep CJ Series (304, 1972–1983)
Jeep J-Series trucks (304/360/401, 1971–1987)

Q&A
Do these valve covers fit both the early and late AMC V8 engines?
Yes. These valve covers fit both AMC Gen II (290, 343, and 390 CID) and Gen III (304, 360, and 401 CID) V8 engines. These engine families share the same external valve cover bolt pattern, allowing the covers to interchange between applications.
Will these fit a Jeep with the AMC 360 or 401?
Yes. These valve covers fit Jeep J-Series trucks (1971–1987), Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SJ (1971–1991), and Full-Size Cherokee SJ (1974–1983) equipped with AMC 360 or 401 V8 engines. They are not compatible with the Jeep Cherokee XJ, which was never factory-equipped with an AMC V8.
Are these made from steel or aluminum?
These valve covers are manufactured from steel and feature a durable chrome-plated finish for corrosion resistance and a classic appearance.
Do these come with gaskets or hardware?
No. These valve covers are sold as a pair only. Gaskets, grommets, breathers, and mounting hardware are not included and must be purchased separately to match your specific application.
What's the height of these valve covers?
These valve covers measure 3-1/8 inches tall and use the standard AMC perimeter-bolt mounting pattern.
Can I use these on an AMC V8 swapped into a non-AMC vehicle?
Yes. As long as your engine uses AMC Gen II or Gen III V8 cylinder heads with the standard AMC valve cover bolt pattern, these valve covers are compatible with engine swap applications regardless of the vehicle they are installed in.
If my AMC V8 has a flywheel or flexplate for one displacement, can I still use this cover on a different displacement engine?
Yes. Valve cover fitment is determined by the cylinder head bolt pattern, which is shared across AMC Gen II (290, 343, and 390 CID) and Gen III (304, 360, and 401 CID) V8 engines. Flywheel and flexplate compatibility is unrelated to valve cover fitment and does not affect whether these covers will fit.
